Frequently Asked Questions 1

These are some of the most common questions we are asked at The Vein Clinic. If you have a question relating to any of our procedures or treatments, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

What is a vein clinic, and what services do you offer?

A vein clinic is a medical facility or practice that specialises in diagnosing and treating various conditions related to the veins, particularly those in the legs. The Vein Clinic offer a range of services aimed at addressing venous disorders and improving the overall health and appearance of a patient's veins. Some of the services that we offer include:

1. Venous Duplex Ultrasound: We often start with a diagnostic ultrasound examination to assess the condition of your leg veins. This non-invasive procedure helps identify problems such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

2. Varicose Vein Treatment: At The Vein Clinic our two most requested procedures are endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) and VNUS closureFAST. The Venefit procedure uses much less heat energy to seal veins than laser and so is associated with much less bruising and pain after the procedure. You will be given enough information during your consultation to decide what the best treatment option is for your veins. Like most operations, excellent results can be obtained with either technology by surgeons who regularly perform large numbers of these procedures. Recently published data suggests that 5 years after treatment, 94% of the treated veins remain closed and free from venous reflux, the underlying cause of varicose veins.

3. Spider Vein Treatment: Spider veins are smaller, superficial veins that can appear as red, blue, or purple webs on the skin's surface. At our clinic we offer treatments such as sclerotherapy to reduce or eliminate the appearance of spider veins.

4. Compression Therapy: Compression stockings or garments are often recommended to help improve blood circulation in the legs and reduce symptoms associated with venous disorders. We have a tailor-made service for patients with venous disorders, lip oedema, Lymphoedema and chronic disease secondary to deep vein thrombosis.

5. Thrombosis Management: We are involved in the management and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and superficial thrombophlebitis, which are conditions involving blood clots in the veins.

6. Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) Management: For individuals with chronic venous insufficiency such as that following DVT, we provide guidance and treatment options to alleviate symptoms like leg swelling, pain, and skin changes.

7. Vein Interventions: One size most definitely does not fit all. We provide ALL of the options for the treatment of lower limb varicose veins. You will be guided through a consultation to chose what is right for your veins, unlike other clinics where you have no choice at all.

8. Educational Resources: We offer patient education on maintaining vein health, lifestyle changes, and preventive measures to minimise the risk of venous disorders. We are internationally recognised for our work and teaching in many different countries and conferences.

9. Follow-Up Care: After treatment, we provide follow-up appointments and scans to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

10. Anaesthetic: Newer techniques for dealing with varicose veins use heat or chemical energy to seal the vein. These procedures are quick and relatively painless so most cases will require only local anaesthetic. This minimally invasive approach virtually eliminates pain and bruising associated with vein stripping surgery.
