WHY A DUPLEX SCAN MATTERS

Why Duplex Ultrasound Matters Before Vein Treatment

At The Vein Clinic, vein treatment is guided by proper medical assessment. Duplex ultrasound is the gold‑standard investigation for diagnosing venous disease and plays a crucial role in ensuring treatments such as sclerotherapy are safe, appropriate, and effective.

Why Assessment Comes First

Visible veins on the surface of the leg, such as those seen in patients seeking thread vein treatment, may be a sign of deeper vein problems. In patients with underlying varicose veins or venous reflux, treating surface veins alone can lead to poor results. Duplex ultrasound allows us to assess vein structure, blood flow, and valve function before deciding on treatment.

What Is Duplex Ultrasound?

A duplex ultrasound scan is a specialised medical ultrasound that creates a real‑time colour map of blood flow within the veins. It allows accurate identification of venous reflux caused by faulty valves and helps determine which veins are contributing to symptoms or visible vein changes.

This level of detail cannot be achieved through visual inspection alone or by using simple listening devices that detect sound but do not show blood flow direction or vein anatomy.

Why Duplex Is Different From Basic Vein Checks

Some clinics rely on limited assessments that only detect the presence of blood flow. These methods cannot map reflux, identify abnormal vein pathways, or assess deeper veins. Duplex ultrasound provides a complete picture, allowing treatment decisions to be based on objective clinical evidence rather than assumption.

Who Performs the Duplex Scan?

Accurate duplex scanning requires specialist training and experience. At The Vein Clinic, scans are performed by a consultant vascular surgeon who also delivers the treatment. This ensures findings are interpreted correctly and directly inform your treatment plan.

What Happens During a Duplex Scan?

The scan is painless and usually performed during your consultation. Warm gel is applied to the leg, and a small handheld probe is used to assess blood flow while you are lying down or standing. Gentle calf compression may be used to simulate normal blood movement.

Most scans take around 30–40 minutes. If a full deep vein assessment is required, the examination may take longer.

How Duplex Improves Treatment Outcomes

By identifying underlying venous reflux, duplex ultrasound helps ensure that treatments such as sclerotherapy are used appropriately and effectively:

  • Thread veins are not treated in isolation when deeper problems exist

  • Varicose veins are addressed before cosmetic treatment

  • Sclerotherapy is used appropriately and effectively

  • Recurrence rates are reduced

This approach protects long‑term vein health rather than focusing solely on appearance.
